The ‘Workbasket Magazine’ started out as ‘Aunt Martha’s Workbasket, Home and Needlecraft for Pleasure and Profit’ in October of 1935. It was the brainchild of Clara and Jack Tillotson from Kansas City, MO. The Great Depression had the nation in it’s grip and if individuals wanted one thing, they made it for themselves. There was no cash to purchase anything and typically when you had the cash, what you were on the lookout for wasn’t on the cabinets. A journal that supplied individuals with the patterns to make things for themselves was simply what was wanted at that time.
